Polecat vs Talkwalker: what each is built for
5 November 2026 · 8 min read
Published by Polecat. Polecat is one of the two platforms compared here. Talkwalker details are drawn from its own published materials and those of its owner, Hootsuite, as at October 2026, and we say plainly where Talkwalker is the better fit.
The short answer
Polecat vs Talkwalker is a comparison of two tools built for different jobs. Talkwalker, now Lumen by Talkwalker within Hootsuite, is a social listening and consumer intelligence platform for marketing, PR and insight teams. Polecat delivers Strategic External Intelligence for risk leaders: it scores events across news, regulators, NGOs, academics and investors, weights them to your strategy and projects risk 3 to 6 months ahead.
Who owns Talkwalker now?
Talkwalker is owned by Hootsuite, and its product is now branded Lumen by Talkwalker. Founded in Luxembourg in 2009, it was acquired by Marlin Equity Partners in 2018. Hootsuite announced an agreement to acquire it on 8 April 2024, with Talkwalker's Luxembourg office set to become the combined company's European headquarters.
Hootsuite's June 2026 release describes Lumen by Talkwalker as its dedicated social intelligence product, fully integrated into Hootsuite's Social OS and connected to Wisdom, its AI agent. Hootsuite's former Listening product is now called Lumen, "powered by Talkwalker". For buyers, this means Talkwalker's product direction now sits within a social media management strategy.

What does Talkwalker do well?
Talkwalker is strong at listening across a very wide range of markets and media types. Its data coverage page describes broad language and geographic coverage, alongside social networks, websites, review sites, video and podcasts. For global brands that need to follow consumer conversation market by market, that breadth matters.
Visual listening. Talkwalker detects logos, scenes and objects in images and logos in video, so a brand can find mentions that never use its name in text. For sponsorship, brand protection and campaign measurement, this is a practical strength.
Workflow inside Hootsuite. Because Lumen sits within Hootsuite's social media management suite, listening data can feed publishing, engagement and AI agent workflows in one place. Talkwalker's Blue Silk GPT features add one-click classification, one-click summaries and conversation clustering.
Developer and AI access. Talkwalker documents a set of APIs, including Search, Streaming, Histogram and Image Detection. Hootsuite's Lumen MCP gives MCP-compatible assistants, such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, access to Lumen listening data.
Talkwalker lists reputation management, crisis management, competitive intelligence and trend research among its use cases. For PR, social and insight teams, it is a capable and well-established platform.
What does Polecat do differently?
Polecat measures exposure rather than conversation. It is built for the risk leader who has to tell a committee how exposed the organisation is, how that compares with peers and where it is heading. Our guide to what Strategic External Intelligence is explains the category in full; four differences matter most against Talkwalker.
Polecat measures the sources where strategic risk starts
Polecat draws on more than 1.4 million premium sources across 195 countries, including the places risk committees need watched: regulatory and policy sources, NGOs, academics and think tanks, earnings calls and AGMs, filings and enforcement, and investor and union sources, as well as news. Social channels are one input among many. A regulatory consultation or an enforcement action against a peer rarely trends, but it can matter more than a week of online volume.
Every event is scored consistently against 20 years of history
Polecat merges coverage of the same development into a single material event, then scores it on six factors: severity, velocity, sentiment, authority, reach and history. Each score is benchmarked against 20 years of comparable events and updates the organisation's Risk Index, out of 100. That consistency is what allows a risk committee to compare this quarter's exposure with last year's, and with peers, on the same basis. Our page on how Polecat scores events sets out the method.
Scores are weighted to your strategy and projected forward
Polecat's Customer Intelligence Model calibrates to each client's own risk taxonomy, definitions and thresholds, so the same event can register as a risk for one company and an opportunity for another. Polecat then forecasts each risk 3 to 6 months ahead, with base, best and worst case scenarios and a probability for each. A horizon scan classifies each risk theme as chronic, recurring, emerging, dormant, contained or fizzled, which separates a lasting shift from a temporary spike.
Output is built for the risk register and the board
Every score traces back to its source evidence, for audit trails and board reporting. Polecat delivers in two layers on one engine: daily Key Posting Alerts, Daily Risk Briefings and weekly Executive News Briefs, then monthly or quarterly dashboards and board reports. An API feeds GRC and integrated risk management platforms. Peer benchmarking compares exposure with peers and the industry on a like-for-like basis, rather than by share of voice. At Wendy's, 25% of documented risks are first surfaced by Polecat's horizon scanning, before they appear anywhere else on the register.
When is Talkwalker the better choice?
Talkwalker is the better choice when the job is listening to consumers and audiences across many markets. If you need visual brand detection, audience insight, customer feedback analytics, social benchmarking or listening that flows straight into Hootsuite publishing and engagement, choose Lumen by Talkwalker or a comparable listening suite.
Polecat does not do those jobs. It is not a social listening or social media monitoring tool, and it does not analyse hashtag reach. A social or insight team should not buy Polecat in place of a listening platform.
When is Polecat the better choice?
Polecat is the better choice when the questions come from the risk committee, the executive or the board. Are we more exposed than our peers? Is this a lasting shift or a passing spike? Which developments in regulation, NGO activity or investor scrutiny are material to our strategy, and where is each risk heading over the next two quarters?
It also fits when outputs must sit inside the risk process: scores mapped to your own taxonomy, an evidence trail that survives audit, and an API into the GRC platform. Polecat publishes its entry price, a £25K fixed-scope Risk Intelligence Audit that benchmarks the risks moving fastest on your register against peers and stands up both layers in three weeks.
Can you use Polecat and Talkwalker together?
Yes. Polecat is designed to run alongside existing media monitoring and social listening tools, not to replace them. Lumen by Talkwalker and Polecat answer different questions for different teams, so in practice they complement each other.
A common arrangement keeps Talkwalker with social, PR and insight teams and gives Polecat to risk, corporate affairs and the executive. When an issue spikes in Talkwalker, Polecat shows whether it connects to wider movement in regulation, NGO pressure or investor scrutiny, and whether it is material to strategy. Frequently asked questions
Is Talkwalker still a separate company?
No. Hootsuite announced an agreement to acquire Talkwalker in April 2024, and its later releases describe Talkwalker as a Hootsuite product. In 2026 Talkwalker was rebranded Lumen by Talkwalker. Hootsuite describes it as its dedicated social intelligence product, integrated into its Social OS and connected to its Wisdom AI agent. Hootsuite's former Listening product is now called Lumen.
Is Polecat a Talkwalker alternative?
Only for risk questions. If you use Talkwalker to judge how exposed the organisation is, compared with peers, and where an issue is heading, Polecat is built for that job. If you use it for social listening, visual brand detection, audience insight or customer feedback, Polecat is not a substitute. Polecat is not a social listening tool and is designed to run alongside one.
Can Talkwalker be used for risk management?
Talkwalker lists reputation management and crisis management among its use cases, with crisis dashboards, spike analysis and alerts. For enterprise risk management, it does not publish a standardised risk index comparable across companies, a method for weighting results to a client's strategy, or a forward-looking risk forecasting method, and risk officers are not among its stated buyers.
Do Polecat and Talkwalker both offer MCP access?
Yes. Hootsuite announced MCP connectors across Perch, Nest and Lumen in June 2026, and its Lumen page states that the Lumen MCP gives assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini access to listening data. Polecat's MCP access lets teams query scored, sourced risk events from assistants such as Microsoft Copilot, Claude and ChatGPT. The difference lies in the data being queried, not the access route.
Can you use Polecat and Talkwalker together?
Yes. Polecat is designed to run alongside existing media monitoring and social listening tools rather than replace them. A common arrangement keeps Lumen by Talkwalker with social, PR and insight teams for listening and engagement, and gives Polecat to risk, corporate affairs and the board for measured exposure, peer benchmarking and risk projection.
