Polecat vs Brandwatch: social listening or strategic risk?
29 October 2026 · 9 min read
Published by Polecat. Polecat is one of the two platforms compared here. Brandwatch details are drawn from its own published materials and those of its parent company, Cision, as at October 2026, and we say plainly where Brandwatch is the better fit.
The short answer
In a Polecat vs Brandwatch comparison, the first point is that the two do different jobs. Brandwatch, part of Cision, is a consumer intelligence and social media management suite for marketers, researchers and communications teams. Polecat delivers Strategic External Intelligence for risk leaders: it scores events across news, regulators, NGOs, academics and investors, weights them to your strategy and projects risk 3 to 6 months ahead.

What does Brandwatch do well?
Brandwatch is strong at understanding consumers and online conversation in depth and over a long period. Its Consumer Research product page describes an archive of online conversation going back to 2008, which supports long-run brand, category and trend research that shorter archives cannot.
Analyst tooling. Research teams can build custom classifiers, run image analysis and work through a broad set of developer APIs, including Analysis, Data Upload, Consumer Research (with live streaming of conversations), Measure, Publish and Engage. Customers can also upload their own first-party data and analyse it beside online data.
A wide suite. Brandwatch combines Consumer Intelligence with Social Media Management (the former Falcon.io products), Influencer Marketing (branded Influence) and Search Intelligence and GenAI Monitoring, built on Trajaan technology. Its Iris AI layer includes Ask Iris, an AI Query Writer and AI Dashboards, announced in November 2025. The same release added coverage of Threads, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn and podcast transcripts.
The Cision group. Customers can pair Brandwatch with Cision's media monitoring and PR Newswire distribution, which suits communications teams that want one supplier. Brandwatch also says it was named Social Listening Solution of the Year in the 2026 MarTech Breakthrough Awards.
Brandwatch lists crisis management and stakeholder management among its use cases, so it is used well beyond marketing. For the jobs it is built for, it is a mature and capable choice.
What does Polecat do differently?
Polecat measures exposure rather than conversation. It is built for the risk leader who has to tell a committee how exposed the organisation is, how that compares with peers and where it is heading. Five differences follow from that. Our guide to what Strategic External Intelligence is sets out the category in full.
Polecat measures the whole outside world, not online conversation
Polecat draws on more than 1.4 million premium sources across 195 countries: news, regulatory and policy sources, NGOs, academics and think tanks, earnings calls and AGMs, filings and enforcement, and investor and union sources. Social channels are one input among many. Many material risks start in a consultation paper, an enforcement action against a peer or an academic study long before they appear in consumer conversation, and these are the sources a risk committee needs watched.
Every event is scored the same way, against 20 years of history
Polecat merges many reports of the same development into a single material event, then scores it on six factors: severity, velocity, sentiment, authority, reach and history. Each score is benchmarked against 20 years of comparable events and updates the organisation's Risk Index, out of 100. Because every event is scored the same way, this quarter's exposure can be compared with last year's, and with a peer's. You can see the full method on our page explaining how Polecat scores events.
Scores are weighted to your strategy
Polecat's Customer Intelligence Model calibrates to each client's own risk taxonomy, definitions and thresholds, so scores drop straight into the categories the risk register already uses. The same event can be a risk to one company and an opportunity to another, and the weighting reflects that. Brandwatch does not publish an equivalent method for weighting results to a client's strategy.
Polecat projects where each risk is heading
Polecat forecasts each risk 3 to 6 months ahead, with base, best and worst case scenarios and a probability attached to each. A horizon scan looks 12 months back and 90 days forward and classifies each risk theme as chronic, recurring, emerging, dormant, contained or fizzled. That separates lasting shifts from temporary spikes in coverage, which is often the question a board asks first.
Output is built for the risk register and the board
Every score traces back to its source evidence, for audit trails and board reporting. Output arrives in two layers on one engine: daily Key Posting Alerts, Daily Risk Briefings and weekly Executive News Briefs, then monthly or quarterly dashboards and board reports. An API feeds GRC and integrated risk management platforms, and MCP access lets teams query the data from AI assistants such as Microsoft Copilot, Claude and ChatGPT. At Wendy's, 25% of documented risks are first surfaced by Polecat's horizon scanning, before they appear anywhere else on the register.
When is Brandwatch the better choice?
Brandwatch is the better choice when the question is about consumers, audiences or social channels. If you need to research what customers think of a product, manage social publishing and engagement, run an influencer programme, analyse reviews alongside your own first-party data or track how your brand appears in search and generative AI answers, choose Brandwatch or another listening suite.
Polecat is not a social listening or social media monitoring tool, and it does not analyse hashtag reach. A marketing or insight team that buys Polecat for those jobs would be buying the wrong product. We would rather say so here than in a renewal meeting.
When is Polecat the better choice?
Polecat is the better choice when the question comes from the risk committee or the board. Typical examples are: how exposed are we to this issue compared with our peers; is this a lasting shift or a passing spike; which developments in regulation, NGO activity or investor scrutiny are material to our strategy; and where is each risk heading over the next two quarters.
It also fits when outputs must sit inside the risk process rather than beside it: scores mapped to your own taxonomy, an evidence trail that survives audit, and an API into the GRC platform. For a first engagement, Polecat publishes its entry price: a £25K fixed-scope Risk Intelligence Audit covering the risks moving fastest on your register, benchmarked against peers, with both layers stood up in three weeks.
Can you use Polecat and Brandwatch together?
Yes. Polecat is designed to run alongside existing media monitoring and social listening tools, not to replace them. The two answer different questions for different teams, so there is little overlap in practice.
A typical split keeps Brandwatch with marketing, insight and social teams, and gives Polecat to risk, corporate affairs and the executive. When a consumer issue surfaces in Brandwatch, Polecat shows whether it is connected to wider developments in regulation, NGO pressure or investor scrutiny, and whether it is becoming material to the organisation's strategy. Frequently asked questions
Is Polecat a Brandwatch alternative?
Only for some jobs. If your team uses Brandwatch to answer risk questions, such as how exposed the organisation is relative to peers and where an issue is heading, Polecat is built for that. If you use Brandwatch for consumer research, social media management or influencer programmes, Polecat is not a substitute. Polecat is designed to run alongside a listening tool that does those jobs.
Is Brandwatch suitable for risk management?
Brandwatch lists crisis management and stakeholder management among its use cases, and communications teams use it in those roles. For enterprise risk management, Brandwatch does not publish a standardised risk score, a method for weighting results to a client's strategy or a forecasting method, and risk officers are not among the buyers it lists. Risk teams usually pair it with a dedicated risk tool.
Does Polecat do social listening?
No. Polecat is not a social listening or social media monitoring tool, and it does not analyse hashtag reach. Social channels are one input among many. Polecat measures events across news, regulators, NGOs, academics, think tanks, filings and investor sources, scores each one consistently against 20 years of comparable events and weights the result to the client's own strategy.
Who owns Brandwatch?
Brandwatch is part of Cision. Cision announced that it had closed its acquisition of Brandwatch on 1 June 2021 and combined it with Falcon.io, another Cision business, to form a single social business. In December 2025 Cision acquired Trajaan, a search intelligence company, whose technology is being integrated into Brandwatch and other Cision products.
Can Polecat and Brandwatch be used together?
Yes, and that is how Polecat is designed to be used. Polecat states that it runs alongside existing media monitoring and social listening tools rather than replacing them. A common split is Brandwatch for marketing, insight and social teams, and Polecat for risk, corporate affairs and the board, with Polecat showing whether an issue raised online is becoming material to the organisation's strategy.
