Polecat vs Signal AI: which fits your risk team?

James Lawn, Chief Executive Officer, Polecat
27 October 2026 · 10 min read

Published by Polecat. Polecat is one of the two platforms compared here, so we have an interest in the outcome. Signal AI details are drawn from Signal AI's own published materials and announcements as at October 2026, and we say plainly where Signal AI is the better fit.

The short answer

Polecat vs Signal AI comes down to the job. Signal AI is the stronger choice for teams that want broad monitoring of licensed premium news, broadcast and social content across communications and risk, delivered into Microsoft 365 Copilot and other AI tools. Polecat is built for risk leaders who need every external event scored on six factors against 20 years of comparable history, weighted to their own strategy and projected 3 to 6 months ahead.

What does Signal AI do well?

Signal AI does four things particularly well: it gives access to a wide base of licensed premium news, it reaches users inside the AI and workplace tools they already use, it monitors a client's own risk register, and it serves communications and risk teams from one platform. For many buyers, these strengths are decisive.

Licensed premium content. Signal AI publicly names licensing relationships with Dow Jones Factiva, LexisNexis, Moody's NewsEdge, the Financial Times and The Washington Post. That brings paywalled business journalism into the same platform as broadcast, podcast, regulatory and social sources.

AI agent and workplace distribution. Signal AI launched an MCP connector in June 2026 and a Microsoft 365 Copilot integration in July 2026, alongside a documented API suite with separate risk and reputation endpoints. Its conversational assistant, Ask AIQ, lets users query the platform in plain language.

Register-led risk monitoring. Risk Scanner, launched in June 2026, lets a client upload its own risk register, or start from risks suggested from its profile, and monitor it against external content. An automated matrix scores the risks that are escalating. Signal AI states that it won the Cross-Functional Risk Intelligence Award in Chartis RiskTech100 2027.

One platform for two buyers. The same platform serves reputation measurement, media monitoring and crisis communications on one side, and risk scanning, horizon scanning and risk reporting on the other. Its 2026 acquisition of Memo added article-level readership data for reputation measurement.

Best for: organisations that want one platform to monitor licensed news and broadcast for both communications and risk teams, with strong delivery into Microsoft 365 Copilot and AI agents.

What does Polecat do differently?

Polecat differs from Signal AI in what it measures, how it scores, how it weights results to the client and how far ahead it looks. Each point below rests on our published method, which is set out in full on our how it works page.

The whole outside world, not mainly news

Polecat treats news as one source among many. It monitors regulators and policy bodies, NGOs, academics and think tanks, earnings calls and AGMs, filings and enforcement, and investor and union sources, drawing on more than 1.4 million premium sources across 195 countries, and merges many reports of one development into a single material event.

Developments that later become expensive often start outside the press: a consultation paper, an academic study, an NGO campaign in another market. Signal AI also covers regulatory filings and litigation, so the difference is one of emphasis.

A consistent score with 20 years of comparable history

Every event Polecat detects is scored on the same six factors: severity, velocity, sentiment, authority, reach and history. Each score is benchmarked against 20 years of comparable events, and every scored event updates the client's Risk Index, out of 100.

Consistency is what makes comparison possible. A chief risk officer can set this quarter's exposure against last year's, and against peers and the industry, because the method has not changed underneath the numbers. Signal AI scores risks by frequency and impact and offers peer benchmarking, but it does not publish its scoring scale or a normalised index for comparing companies, or one company over time.

Weighted to your strategy, not only your register

Polecat's Customer Intelligence Model calibrates to each client's own risk taxonomy, definitions and thresholds, so scores drop straight into the risk register in categories the team already uses. It also reflects the fact that the same event can be a risk to one company and an opportunity to another. A new packaging rule may threaten a business that has not invested in alternatives and favour one that has.

Signal AI's Risk Scanner takes a register-led approach, aligning monitoring to the risks already on a client's register or suggested from its profile. Signal AI does not publish a mechanism for weighting external developments against stated strategic objectives. For Polecat, that weighting is the core of the method.

A 3 to 6 month projection with scenarios

Polecat projects each risk 3 to 6 months ahead, with a base, best and worst case scenario and a probability attached to each. Its horizon scan looks 12 months back and 90 days forward and classifies each risk theme as chronic, recurring, emerging, dormant, contained or fizzled.

Signal AI's public pages describe early warning and horizon scanning, and trade press has reported that Ask AIQ lets executives simulate scenarios, but Signal AI does not publish a forecast horizon or methodology. A stated horizon with explicit probabilities is easier for a risk committee to challenge and plan against.

An evidence trail, two layers of delivery and a published price

Every Polecat score traces back to its source evidence, which supports audit trails and board reporting. Delivery follows the Two-Layer Model: Key Posting Alerts, Daily Risk Briefings and weekly Executive News Briefs in the daily layer; live dashboards, the platform workspace and board reports in the monthly or quarterly layer. Both run on one quantification engine, and sector analysts covering finance, energy, pharma, retail, and data and AI check outputs and work with clients.

Both companies deliver by API and MCP, so access into GRC platforms and AI assistants is not what separates them. The commercial model does: Polecat publishes its entry price, a fixed-scope £25K Risk Intelligence Audit, while Signal AI's pricing is quote-based.

When is Signal AI the better choice?

Signal AI is the better choice when the main need is broad, timely monitoring of licensed news, broadcast and social coverage, particularly if communications and risk teams want to share one tool.

  • Your communications or PR team needs media monitoring, reputation measurement and crisis communications support, and the risk team is content to work from the same platform.
  • Paywalled business news from named premium publishers is central to what you monitor.
  • You want external content surfaced inside Microsoft 365 Copilot through a vendor's own Marketplace integration.
  • A register-led view, monitoring the risks you have already listed, is sufficient for your purposes.

When is Polecat the better choice?

Polecat is the better choice when the question is how exposed the organisation is, relative to its peers, and where each risk is heading.

  • You need a comparable score that a risk committee can track over time and benchmark against peers and the industry.
  • Developments from regulators, NGOs, academics and think tanks matter to you as much as press coverage.
  • You need external risk weighted to your own taxonomy and strategy, so that an event is read as a risk or an opportunity depending on your position.
  • Your board wants a 3 to 6 month projection with scenarios and probabilities, and every score traceable to source evidence.
  • You want a fixed-scope first engagement at a published price, which makes internal approval straightforward.

At Wendy's, 25% of documented risks are first surfaced by Polecat's horizon scanning, before they appear anywhere else on the register. As Bob Bowman, its Chief Risk Officer, puts it: "you cannot model what you cannot see."

Can you use both Polecat and Signal AI?

Yes, and for some organisations that is the sensible arrangement. Polecat is designed to run alongside existing media monitoring and social listening tools rather than replace them. A communications team might use Signal AI for daily monitoring and reputation measurement, while the risk function uses Polecat for scored, strategy-weighted exposure and forward projection in the register and at board level.

The two overlap on risk scanning, so a team buying for risk alone should test both on the same register. Our guide to Strategic External Intelligence sets out ten questions to ask any provider. Frequently asked questions

Is Polecat a Signal AI alternative?

For risk teams, yes. Both serve chief risk officers and both deliver by API and MCP. Signal AI centres on monitoring licensed news, broadcast and social content for communications and risk teams. Polecat scores events across the whole outside world on six factors against 20 years of comparable history, weights them to the client's strategy and projects each risk 3 to 6 months ahead. Communications teams may still prefer Signal AI.

Does Signal AI have an API and MCP connector?

Yes. Signal AI publishes an API suite with risk and reputation endpoints, launched an MCP connector for AI agents in June 2026 and made a Microsoft 365 Copilot integration available in July 2026. Polecat also delivers by API, for GRC and integrated risk management platforms, and by MCP for assistants such as Microsoft Copilot, Claude and ChatGPT. Access methods are therefore not the main difference between them.

How does Signal AI's Risk Scanner compare with Polecat's Customer Intelligence Model?

Risk Scanner, launched in June 2026, monitors a client's uploaded or suggested risk register against external content and scores escalating risks with an automated matrix. Polecat's Customer Intelligence Model calibrates scoring to the client's own taxonomy, definitions and thresholds and weights events to its strategy, so the same event can register as a risk for one company and an opportunity for another.

Which is better for a chief risk officer?

It depends on the question the chief risk officer needs answered. For broad monitoring of licensed news alongside a communications team, Signal AI is a strong fit. For a consistent Risk Index that can be benchmarked against peers, compared with 20 years of history and projected 3 to 6 months ahead with scenarios and probabilities, Polecat is built for that job.

How much do Polecat and Signal AI cost?

Signal AI does not publish its pricing; it is quote-based. Polecat publishes its entry point: a fixed-scope Risk Intelligence Audit at £25K, which covers the risks moving fastest on your register, benchmarks them against peers and stands up both delivery layers in three weeks. An instant demo is also available on the Polecat site.
