Polecat vs Cision: PR suite or risk intelligence?
10 November 2026 · 9 min read
Published by Polecat. Polecat is one of the two platforms in this comparison of Polecat vs Cision. Competitor details are drawn from Cision's own published materials as at October 2026, and we say plainly where Cision is the better fit.
The short answer
Polecat and Cision answer different questions. Cision is a PR and communications suite: media monitoring, journalist outreach, press release distribution through PR Newswire, and social listening through Brandwatch. Polecat measures how exposed an organisation is across news, regulators, NGOs, academics, think tanks and investors, scored against 20 years of comparable history and weighted to its strategy. Choose Cision to run PR, Polecat to measure exposure.

What does Cision do well?
Cision covers the full PR workflow, from finding a journalist to reporting on the coverage, within one group. It has been privately held since 2020 and states that its platform is built for PR and communications teams.
End-to-end PR workflow. CisionOne brings together media monitoring, instant insights and reporting, journalist outreach, social listening and management, and professional media insight services. PR Newswire adds release distribution and placement, investor relations tools and multimedia content production. Few communications teams need to look elsewhere for the mechanics of media relations.
Traditional media depth. Cision publishes coverage of TV and radio stations, podcasts and premium paywalled titles alongside online news, print and social platforms. A June 2026 partnership brought Bloomberg Media journalism into communications workflows. For teams whose reputation is shaped by broadcast and business press, that breadth is valuable.
A wider group to draw on. Brandwatch, a Cision company since 2021, adds consumer intelligence and social media management. The December 2025 acquisition of Trajaan adds search intelligence and monitoring of generative AI answers, and CisionOne's AI Visibility dashboard tracks brand visibility and share of voice across AI platforms including ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
AI across the workflow. CisionOne AI offers coverage summaries, a Boolean creator, pitch generation and pitch timing, recommended next steps and React Score, which flags potentially harmful content such as fake news or hate speech. AI Coverage Analysis, launched in June 2026, recommends where to respond or amplify.
For running PR and communications, Cision is a strong and established choice.
What does Polecat do differently?
Polecat measures exposure, not coverage. Cision helps a communications team manage what is said about the organisation. Polecat tells corporate affairs and risk leaders how exposed the organisation is across the whole outside world, relative to peers, and where that exposure is heading. Five differences follow.
It reads the places where risk forms before the press
Polecat monitors news, regulators, NGOs, academics, think tanks and investors across 195 countries, drawing on more than 1.4 million premium sources. Earnings calls, AGMs, filings, enforcement actions and investor and union sources sit alongside media coverage. Social channels are one input among many; Polecat is not a social listening tool.
A consultation paper, an NGO campaign in another market or an enforcement pattern against a peer will often matter before it is widely reported. Polecat merges many reports of the same development into a single material event, so a team reviews one thing rather than hundreds of near-duplicates.
It scores every event consistently, against 20 years of history
Each event is rated on six factors: severity, velocity, sentiment, authority, reach and history. Scores are benchmarked against 20 years of comparable events, and each one updates the organisation's Risk Index, a score out of 100. The method is set out on our page explaining how Polecat measures and scores events.
Because every event is scored the same way, exposure can be compared over time and like for like with peers and the wider industry. Cision's React Score assesses potentially harmful content within monitoring; Cision does not publish a standardised, cross-company risk index or its methodology.
It weights each event to your strategy
Polecat's Customer Intelligence Model calibrates to each client's own risk taxonomy, definitions and thresholds, so scores drop straight into the risk register. The same event can be a risk to one company and an opportunity to another. A tightening of supply chain disclosure rules may expose a business with gaps and strengthen the position of one that has already reported. Counting mentions cannot capture that.
It helps decide when to speak and when to hold back
Corporate affairs teams are often judged on timing. Polecat monitors issues and stakeholders against the client's own issues and terminology, measures change as the last 90 days against the prior 90, and assesses reach separately from volume. That helps teams decide when to lead, respond, prepare or hold back, and tell lasting shifts apart from temporary spikes in coverage.
The horizon scan looks 12 months back and 90 days forward, classifying each theme as chronic, recurring, emerging, dormant, contained or fizzled. Polecat projects risk 3 to 6 months ahead with base, best and worst case scenarios and a probability for each. It measures reputation over time and benchmarks it against peers; it does not forecast reputation.
Every score has an evidence trail
Every Polecat score traces back to its source evidence, for audit trails and board reporting. Sector analysts covering finance, energy, pharmaceuticals, retail, and data and AI check outputs and work alongside client teams.
When is Cision the better choice?
Cision is the better choice when the job is running PR and communications. In particular:
- Press release distribution. PR Newswire provides distribution and placement. Polecat does not distribute content.
- Journalist outreach. CisionOne includes a journalist database, outreach tools and AI support for pitch writing and timing.
- Investor relations communications. PR Newswire includes investor relations tools.
- Broadcast, podcast and premium press monitoring. Cision publishes coverage of TV, radio, podcasts and paywalled titles for teams that report on earned media.
- Social and consumer insight. Through Brandwatch, the Cision group offers consumer intelligence and social media management.
If your team needs to issue news, place stories and report on coverage, choose Cision.
When is Polecat the better choice?
Polecat is the better choice when the question is exposure, and the answer has to satisfy a risk committee or board.
- The board asks how you compare. Consistent scoring lets you benchmark exposure against peers and the industry like for like.
- The issue is forming outside the press. Regulatory, NGO, academic and investor activity often moves first.
- You need to know where a risk is heading. Projection 3 to 6 months ahead gives planning a horizon, with stated scenarios.
- The output must reach the risk register. Scores calibrated to your taxonomy, with an evidence trail, can feed GRC and integrated risk management platforms by API, and AI assistants by MCP.
- You want a known starting cost. The Risk Intelligence Audit is £25K and stands up both delivery layers in three weeks.
At Wendy's, 25% of documented risks are first surfaced by Polecat's horizon scanning, before they appear anywhere else on the register.
Can you use Polecat and Cision together?
Yes. Polecat is designed to run alongside existing media monitoring and social listening tools, not replace them, and a PR suite and a measurement layer do not overlap much in practice.
Cision runs the communications workflow: monitoring, outreach, distribution and coverage reporting. Polecat supplies the measured view of exposure underneath it, delivered in two layers on one quantification engine. Daily, Key Posting Alerts, Daily Risk Briefings and weekly Executive News Briefs reach the right teams. Monthly or quarterly, live dashboards and board reports bring the evidence together for the committee cycle.
The combination lets a communications team act on coverage while corporate affairs and risk leaders see whether that coverage reflects a real change in the organisation's position. Frequently asked questions
Is Polecat a Cision alternative?
Only for part of the job. Cision is a PR and communications suite covering media monitoring, journalist outreach, press release distribution through PR Newswire and social listening. Polecat offers none of those workflow tools. It measures an organisation's exposure across news, regulators, NGOs, academics, think tanks and investors, scored against 20 years of comparable history, and is designed to run alongside existing monitoring tools.
What is the difference between Cision's React Score and Polecat's Risk Index?
Cision describes React Score as flagging potentially harmful content and mentions, such as fake news or hate speech, within its monitoring. Polecat's Risk Index is a score out of 100 that each scored event updates, with every event rated on severity, velocity, sentiment, authority, reach and history against 20 years of comparable events, weighted to the client's own risk taxonomy and traceable to its sources.
Which is better for a corporate affairs team, Polecat or Cision?
For journalist outreach, press release distribution, investor relations tools, media monitoring and coverage reporting, Cision is the better fit. For measuring how exposed the organisation is across the whole outside world, comparing that exposure with peers and telling a lasting shift from a temporary spike in coverage, Polecat is built for the question. Many corporate affairs teams need both.
Does Cision forecast risk?
Cision's AI Coverage Analysis, launched in June 2026, gives recommendations on where to respond or amplify. Cision does not publish forward-looking risk forecasts. Polecat projects each risk three to six months ahead, with base, best and worst case scenarios and a probability for each. Polecat measures reputation over time and benchmarks it against peers; it does not forecast reputation.
How much do Polecat and Cision cost?
Cision's pricing is quote-based; its site offers pricing request forms and no published prices. Polecat publishes its entry point: a fixed-scope Risk Intelligence Audit at £25K, which benchmarks the risks moving fastest on your register against peers and stands up daily alerting and periodic reporting within three weeks.
